Robert H. Messier, Jr., MD, PhD, specializes in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and joined the Grand Strand Regional medical staff in 2013. He previously practiced at Centra Health Cardiothoracic Surgery, CentraHealth System, in Lynchburg, VA, where he was Chief of Cardiovascular Services.
Dr. Messier attended medical school and completed his general surgery residency at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC; completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency and fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA; and completed residencies at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, in cardiothoracic transplantation, at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, in thoracic aortic surgery and at Eastern Virginia School of Medicine, Norfolk, VA, in endovascular surgery. Dr. Messier is a member of the Society for Thoracic Surgeons, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is board certified in general and thoracic surgery.
